Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
It has been a very busy and whistle-stop term 2, but we have accomplished a lot in the classroom and extra-murally: culturally and on the sports field. Thank you to the teachers and staff for their commitment in ensuring that we were able to achieve our objectives in the classroom in this short term.
We have an extended long holiday ahead and it is imperative that our children use some time in the holiday for academic work. I would like to suggest the following:
1.Literacy:
Each child participates actively in the Read-a-thon as reading is absolutely essential for a child's academic development. Reading not only promotes creativity and broadens a child's horizons with information but it has an effect on a child's progress in all learning areas as it affects comprehension skills and understanding of questions and also improves spelling. Please monitor your child's reading and assist with your child's comprehension skills while reading fiction or non-fiction books, magazines and newspapers.
2.Numeracy/Mathematics:
Numeracy and Mathematics is our focus for this year. Many children, after signing the reports it is evident, have difficulty with Mathematics. To be good at
Mathematics, takes PRACTICE! Please, as a parent, support your child by revising and practising all
the Mathematics covered during term 1 and 2 as well as do some mental maths (addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division tables) with your child on a daily basis during the holidays.
I would suggest a holiday revision programme at a set time daily as follows:
Grades 1 to 4: 40 minutes to 1 hour per day
•Supervised reading for 20 minutes to a ½ hour per day
•Numeracy / Mathematics revision for 20 minutes to ½ hour per day
Grades 5 to 7: 1 hour per day at a set time daily
•Daily reading for a minimum of a ½ to an hour per day.
•Maths revision for a minimum of a ½ to an hour per day.
Parents need to support and make it happen and you will be amazed at the improvement in your child's progress if this is enforced.
STAFFING: I would like to inform you that Mrs Wendy Hammond, the Learning Support / Remedial teacher will be leaving us at the end of the term. Mrs Hammond has decided that she would like to devote more time to her family as well as start a new business venture. We thank her for her contribution to the school and wish her well in the future.
SENIOR CULTURAL EVENING: Thank you to Ms Attwell and Ms Ferreira and the entire Music Department for arranging the wonderful Senior Cultural evening last week Wednesday. It was a wonderful concert by our senior pupils of music, dance and poetry. Well done!
BARN DANCE - TUESDAY 8 JUNE: Notes4Notes and the CBP's have joined forces in hosting this year's Barn Dance tonight, Tuesday, 8 June at 18:30 for 19:00 which will not impact on school work and will be a great way to celebrate the end of the term and the beginning of the long June holidays! These will be information meetings and you will be given the opportunity to ask any questions but they will not be for individual discussion on your child's progress. If you require a meeting with your child's teacher, you will need to set up an appointment with your respective child's teacher.
GREAT GRASS GROW-A-THON: The response to the ‘make-over' to the front entrance of the school with artificial grass has been extremely positive. As stated in the previous newsletter we would like to lay turf on the tarred area behind the hall where our juniors play at breaks as this is an area in which many children fall and injure themselves. The turf costs R350 per sq metre. The CBP's will be fundraising later on in the year for this project as well.
THANK YOU to the following generous families that have also made new donations:
3 sq metres donated
Curry family (Cameron)
1 sq metre donated:
Trafford family (Devlin)
It is already 45 sq metres!
GOAL is 145 sq metres!
ONLY 100 sq metres TO GO!
THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO MAKE OUR PLAYGROUND FOR YOUR CHILDREN A USER FRIENDLY PLAYGROUND! If you have made a pledge but have not paid, please could you settle with Belinda Caldis.
If you would like to make a pledge for a square metre of turf, please email your donation to bursar@campsbayprimary.co.za
MERIT AWARDS: Congratulations to the following pupils, each of whom was presented with a merit award at assembly. We are proud of each one of you and would like to encourage you all to continue doing your best at all times.

SPORT:
Enclosed please find a comprehensive sports result sheet for term 2. This sports result sheet will also provide you with explanation of reason(s) for the cancellation of matches during the term. Camps Bay Primary, as a matter of policy, does not cancel matches unless extreme weather conditions force us to cancel matches.
SPCA: Collection of Cat Food and Kitty Litter
Natalie Goldie and Di Pelman along with Cole (grade 6) would like you to donate cat food and kitty litter to the SPCA. A "big" box has been left at reception for collection - once the box is full, Natalie Goldie and some of our children in school uniform will deliver it and hand it over to the SPCA. Please help all those cold "grizabella kitties" this winter! Thank you Cole.
